Pumpkin Spice Potpourri

9/23/10

Today marks the beginning of Autumn. This is by far my most favorite time of the year.  For me, there is a certain nostalgia that comes with the changing of the leaves, the fresh harvest scent and crisp coolness in the air, and let's not forget the approaching holiday seasons.  I love busting out my fall decor and creating that warm festive feeling in my home and what better way to do that than by filling your home with the scent of pumpkin and spice.

Here is a great little recipe for some homemade potpourri.  ENJOY!

Ingredients:
1 cup pumpkin chunks, about 1" in diameter
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1-2 packets of apple cider mix
3 cinnamon sticks
3 bay leaves
1/4 cup whole cloves
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 lemon or lime slices, fresh or 2 tablespoons dried lemon peel
2 tablespoons orange peel or dried orange peel
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 quarts water (to start with, more if you need it)

Optional Ingredients for a Ghoulish Twist on All Hallows Eve:
1/4 cup pumpkin guts (not just the seeds)
2 hard boiled eggs (peel them and use a marker to draw on an iris and pupil so that it looks like an eyeball floating in the potion)
1/4 cup mixed red and black liquorish cut into small chunks
1/4 cup candy corn
1/4 cup Swedish fish or Dots

Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a medium saucepan or a small cauldron. Simmer on low heat and add more water as needed.
