Spiral Felt Flower Bows

3/23/11

I have 3 boys and it was hard for me to understand the joy of making bows.  However, I have 6 nieces and decided to make some bows for them at Christmas.  With all my other Christmas projects, they never got done.  After our Christmas holiday, we discovered that we are having a baby girl.  All of the sudden, the bows became a priority.

Unfortunately, I made these at an activity and I didn't have my camera on me.  So, I'll be showing this tutorial with scrap fabric vs felt.

What you need:
  • 5"x5" piece of felt for every bow
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
  • and beads, pearls, buttons to place in the middle (can be anything)

Take your fabric square and cut a squiggly spiral.  I do this by free hand, but this image is to give you and idea of what you are trying to accomplish.  You can print this and use it as a template if you want to, but I haven't tried using it.
Remove the outer squared pieces to leave only the curved outside.

Starting with the center, begin tucking the spiral so that the is no spaces showing.  When you have it the way you want it, carefully use the glue gun to keep the shape you have created.  I found that this was easiest by starting in the center, lifting up small sections, placing a minimal amount of hot glue, and working my way out. (FYI- Because felt fabric is thicker and easier to use, I needed to cut my scrap fabric to 7"x7" that's why the flower is so big.)

When that is done, hot glue your centerpiece in as well as your clip on the back.  And you are done!  I can't wait to put this on my baby girl!

Where do you get your felt? Where do you get the clips for them? Also, is it easier to cut more in a circle like your free hand drawing, or do more of a square like you showed on the scrap fabric. Just trying to figure out if I can do this or not. :)

You can get felt from any craft or fabric store (Hobby Lobby, Micheals, JoAnn Fabrics, Etc). Textured felt is always a little more expensive, but still relatively cheap.

I cut a perfect square so that is was easier to make a circle. In other words...that is my free hand spiral. They don't need to be perfect. You can maneuver them and manipulate them anyway you want. If you don't like the way it's looking, re-work it until you get the look you want. The more you play with it, the better you get at it. Believe me, anyone can do this.
