THIS SWAP IS NOW FULL
Karena and I are excited to announce that we are going to be doing our first I Spy Swap. Karena has been involved in a few swaps through Green Apple Orchard and we thought it would be fun to finally have one of our own. This is the project that Karena is working on. Our cousin Connie made this beautiful I Spy Quilt which has 208 squares. With this swap you will be getting 200 squares.
Here's how it works: (Please Read These Rules and Instructions Thoroughly Before Leaving a Comment)
*Very important!* Please only comment if you are going to be able to meet the deadline! Fabric should be in my mailbox before or on the date of the deadline, not mailed by that date. Thanks!
1. Mail me your 200 I-Spy squares by...
(DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED once all spots are filled)
and get back 200 squares, all different, by...
(DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED once all spots are filled)
2. I need 15 additional people to join the swap. In order to join, just leave a comment including your email address. (If you are not located in the USA, please send your fabrics ASAP.)
3. Cut 20 4" squares out of each of 10 different novelty print fabrics (quilting quality cotton wovens - absolutely no flannel). A 1/4-yard cut or fat quarter will get you 20 4" squares, so you will be purchasing a total of about 2 1/2 yards of fabric. This is NOTHING when you consider all of the fabrics you will be getting back.
4. In order to avoid duplicates, everyone will need to search out unusual or obscure prints. Try to look for things that aren't available at chain stores like Joann's and Hobby Lobby. Pick fun prints that you love!
5. Remember that we are looking for fabric with objects on it, not printy-prints. (A fabric with FLOWERS on it is very different from a FLORAL PRINT.)
Floral Print Fabric with sunflowers on it
7. Remember seam allowances! Be sure you can tell what you are looking at within a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square. Nobody wants only half of an object in their square -- cut them well!
(See the difference!)
(Depending on your fabric choice, you may need to buy more than 1/4 yard in order to get an object into each cut square.)
8. Keep in mind, that these prints should be kid friendly. Children should be able to look at the fabric and easily know what it is.
9. This is supposed to be random. Do not send in multiple prints. No one wants to end up with multiple Dog prints. You want to have as many different objects as possible.
10. If you don't own one, now would be the time to borrow or invest in a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. Quilting is all about precision.
11. Do not pre-wash your fabric. It just adds unnecessary steps to the process. I have never had a problem with not washing my fabrics.
12. You will be paying for all shipping costs. Fabric isn't heavy and this won't cost much, but you will need to send your fabric into me along with a prepaid envelope for sending your 200 squares back.
The first 15 people who comment here will get to participate! If you don't get into this swap, don't worry...we will be doing more in the future. If there are already 15 people, you can still comment...sometimes someone will drop out. Please leave your email address in the comment as I will be sending out an email with details of the swap as soon as we are full. Check your email often. Also, feel free to tell any friends you have that might be interested in joining us!

We'd love to have you Nancy! We're going to need you email address. So, you can either leave another comment or email it to us. Thanks!
My question is how big would the blanket be when it is finished?
I'm not exactly sure how large Connie made her blanket. The great thing about an I spy quilt is you can make it anyway and any size you like.
I think I'd like to do this. I LOVE that it's I Spy!! My boys will get a kick out of that!
I would totally be in for this except I happen to be going out of town this weekend and don't think I can get 200 squares cut in time!
I would love to do this! Thanks

Kristi-
I'm changing the dates on when the fabric needs to be sent to me. Once all the spots are filled up I'll let each participant know when the fabric needs to be sent to me. That should give you plenty of time.
Kristi-
IF you would like to get in on this swap just leave a comment with your email address, or you can email it to me.
I'm in... nikkinjohn@msn.com Please let me know when the fabric is due. Thanks Nikki
Nikki... you were curious about the size of the BEAUTIFUL I-Spy quilt pictured above. So was I so I made some calculations. Here is my estimate: 64-1/2 inches by 90 inches. This assumes the 15 sashing rows are 1-inch finished width each, the first border is 1-inch finished width, the second border is 8-inches finished width and the binding is 1/2-inch. Each 4-inch square will finish at 3-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches using1/4 inch seams. A field of 208 (13 across and 16 up and down) I-Spy squares only with no sashing or borders would be 45-1/2 inches by 56 inches. Did I mention I'm a number geek ;-) ? I've made two different I-Spy quilts already, and no matter how you combine the squares the quilts are adorable!
Nancy, the finished quilt is approx. 58" x 82". The finished sashings are an inch thick, the colored border is an inch thick, and the white border is 6 inches thick, and the binding overlapped about 1/2 inch onto the white. We love our I-Spy quilt! There are more squares on the back (just one stripe). The idea came from Susan at Crafterhours here:

I'd love to see the I-Spy quilts you have made! Connie at greenappleorchard.blogspot.com
If you don't end up having enough people sign up I would like to take another spot. Thanks
